Visual Quality: The encoding looks extremely good. This still happens on the 3080 Tier, and I generally will turn v-sync on to alleviate some of these issues. This seems to be because the scene complexity is changing and causing the game to render at a rapidly chaning high or low framerate. That said, in many games the image will jitter or stutter. You can certainly adapt to it, and may never notice without the previous experience, but it's worth noting that IMHO improved latency is not a reason to upgrade.įrame Smoothness: If I recall correctly, it's common practice to disable V-Sync on game streaming services like GFN since the capture of the game footage will be at a set rate regardless. This was true on the old Founders tier, and the 3080 tier. Games like Tomb Raider and Control that I've previously played locally, cause me to spin around into walls due to the time it takes the camera to begin panning when played on GFN. Interestingly, despite the nVidia marketing touting superior latency with the 3080 tier, I can't really perceive a difference, and things like camera rotations are still annoyingly laggy-feeling to me. Slightly laggier is my desktop PC, and the worst is my Mac Mini M1. Latency/Lag: In my experience, the best GFN latency I get is playing on the Shield with connected over ethernet.

There's nothing more to say, it's a phenomenal upgrade over the previous 1080p limit and still adds to the experience over 1440p. I can't put my finger on it, but it's just not quite as nice as what I can get locally (possible down to some oddity with my TV's local settings. HDR looks good, though there is something slightly different about the luminance.

HDR: HDR support worked great on every game I tried while using an nVidia Shield Pro set-top box. "Control" and "Cyberpunk 2077" gave me no problem enabling it for extra performance. DLSS support is not universal: For reasons unknown to me, I was unable to activate DLSS on "Shadow of the Tomb Raider". I'm sure the subreddit will be flooded with reviews of the new GFN service tier soon, this is not an in-depth review, but rather just a couple of quick observations that might be of note to those still on the proverbial fence. I just updated it with a couple of 3080 Tier GFN benchmark numbers.
